The Mars Lumograph was actually one of my first real artist graphite pencils. Not only are they a classic, but they are about as traditional of a drawing pencil as you can get. They range from the soft and dark B grades to the harder and lighter H grades.
In addition, they are often used as a reliable option for young adult artists that are learning the craft. This is because they are incredibly durable and easy to use. If you are looking for a pencil that can put up with some turbulence, this is the one you want.
The Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils are indeed known for their consistent quality and smooth graphite. Also, they are highly regarded by artists for their reliable performance and ability to deliver consistent results. In conclusion, graphite cores in Mars Lumograph pencils are well-regarded for their smoothness, which allows for precise and controlled drawing.
Faber-Castell 9000:
Faber-Castell’s are a graphite pencil that has been on the market since 1761. This is proof in and of itself that they are a very reliable pencil!
They have a very extensive option list for harshness, with over 16 different options. In addition, they have excellent lightfastness, meaning that the lines and shades drawn with these pencils will remain true and vibrant for an extended period.
Another important note about this brand, Fabre-Castell, is that they are very sustainable. They are made from responsibly sourced wood and conform to environmentally friendly manufacturing standards.
Caran d’Ache Grafwood:
Caran d’Ache Grafwood graphite pencils are also a very old and reliable brand in the world of artists. One of the main takeaways from them is that they are incredibly creamy smooth when using. Their lead also stays impressively sharp without breakage.
However, Caran d’Ache pencils are slightly larger than a regular pencil width, which means they need a larger pencil sharpener. So, make sure you have one handy!
Caran d’Ache is also committed to sustainability, and Grafwood pencils reflect this. They are made from FSC-certified wood, indicating responsible forestry practices.
Derwent Graphic:
Derwent Graphic graphite pencils are an English brand of pencil. They are well-regarded drawing pencils known for their quality and versatility.
The smooth texture of Derwent Graphic pencils makes them easy to blend and layer. This allows for seamless transitions and shading techniques. Also, these pencils are known for not having an excess amount of dust coming off the paper/graphite. So, if you are an artist that does not like the dust aspect of graphite, these are the pencil for you. However, if you like to blend with the excess dust, do not get these pencils.
I also know from experience that these pencils have a bit more of a “chunky” wood to them when sharpening. These pencils are definitely a bit more delicate to use in my experience.
Mitsubishi Hi-Uni:
The Hi-Uni pencils are known for their high-density graphite core, which provides a smooth and consistent drawing experience. The graphite is formulated to deliver rich and dark lines with excellent depth and contrast.
Not only do they produce rich pigment, but they are also very easy to sharpen. They are made from a cedar wood which can be sharpened very finely and the wood isn’t chunky.
They are also highly regarded because they are so break resistant. Hi-Uni Pencils are known for being quite durable and can put up with a lot. This can be very important if you are a scatter brain artist like I am!
